Somebody has to tell you the truth and I can do that hard job...
Ciao future med student! So, you've decided to conquer the International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT), but English isn't your native language, and those scientific terms are throwing you a curveball. Fear not! As someone who's been there and conquered that, (not only that, but afterward I learned German and Italian too, so you can count on me) I'm here to share some tips and encouragement to help you soar through the linguistic challenges and ace the IMAT.
Here is the truth I promised: If you struggle with scoring better on IMAT or with your time management during the exam simulation, the language barrier might be the problem
1. Embrace the Journey:First things first, kudos to you for taking on this challenge! Embrace the journey with an open mind. Learning scientific terms in a second language is like mastering a new set of skills – it takes time, practice, and a dash of patience.
Start building your own dictionary of scientific terms. When you encounter a new word, jot it down along with its meaning. Regularly review and expand this glossary to reinforce your understanding. Make it colorful, add doodles, whatever helps it stick!
3. Break Down the Terms:
Scientific terms might look like a jumble of letters, but they often have roots in Latin or Greek. Break them down into smaller parts. For example, 'cardiovascular' can be broken into 'cardio' (heart) and 'vascular' (vessels). Understanding roots can make deciphering complex terms a breeze.
4. Practice Reading Scientific Texts:
The more you expose yourself to scientific texts, the more familiar you'll become with the language. Pick up medical articles, journals, or even textbooks to practice reading. This will not only boost your scientific vocabulary but also improve your reading speed.
The best way to do it is to use materials in English for your preparation
5. Utilize Flashcards:
Flashcards aren't just for memorization; they're your secret weapon for quick recall. Create flashcards with the term on one side and the definition on the other. Quiz yourself regularly to reinforce your memory. My all-time favorite Flashcard tools are Quizlet and Anki.
6. Watch Educational Videos:
Engage with educational videos that cover medical topics. Platforms like YouTube often have animated explanations that visually break down complex concepts. This can significantly enhance your comprehension and pronunciation of scientific terms.
7. Read Aloud:
Practice reading scientific passages aloud. This not only helps improve your pronunciation but also trains your brain to process and understand the information more efficiently. Bonus: It boosts your confidence!
8. Improve Reading Speed:
Time management is crucial in the IMAT. Train yourself to read faster by gradually increasing the complexity of the texts you read. Set a timer and challenge yourself to finish a passage within a specific timeframe. The more you practice, the quicker you'll become.
- 9. My favorite HACK is: (which is free and zero effort)
Search for Glossaries of A-levels, AP or IB. For example: google "AP Biology Glossary" and check the ones you find, they always have the words and their meanings so you won't have to search for the explanation of every word, besides they will be related to your IMAT Exam terms. You can directly copy them to your flashcards, or your own glossary.
10. Stay Positive and Consistent:
Learning a new language and mastering scientific terms is a journey, not a sprint. Stay positive, be consistent in your efforts, and celebrate the small victories along the way. Remember, every step forward is a step toward your dream of studying medicine.
You've got this! The IMAT may seem like a mountain now, but with determination and a bit of language gymnastics, you'll reach the summit. Embrace the learning process, stay positive, and know that every challenge you overcome is a step closer to realizing your dream of medical school. Best of luck, future healer!
